How to Maintain Rubber Rollers

Dec. 14, 2022

Improper care and maintenance lead to various problems and damages in Rubber Rollers like:

During Usage

ㆍOne should be highly cautious while fitting the bearings, as it may bend or damage the journal ends by hammering or over forcing. Keep a regular check on the journal ends/bearing seats, and sockets for any wear or damage.

ㆍIt is always recommended to use a bearing puller to change the bearings, instead of using a hammer.

Passivated Extrusion Roller

ㆍProper alignment is the bottom line. The fact is, high speeds indeed evoke high friction between the wire and roller. However, the force of friction causes trouble only when rolls are not precisely aligned. The increased wear on load points leads to a decrease in product quality and a shorter lifespan of the equipment. Those load points are prone to failure due to uneven friction distributed along more than one axis. The speed of misaligned rollers may be the same, but the distance that two edges of the web shall pass is different due to improper positioning. The overwhelming stress acting upon the web often causes paper and other soft materials to rupture or reduces a stiff material's quality.

The parallel mounting of the rolls is an essential activity that ensures the mechanical parts' longevity, such as bearing and wire on one side. On the other side, the precise parallel roll mounting allows equal stretching force upon the web, ensuring its uniform quality. The accurate alignment of multiple rollers in a piece of machinery or along the production line is a time-demanding job due to a need to determine every roll position independently. Manufacturers know that those types of excessive downtimes are very costly. Utilizing new techniques and technologies to maximize scheduled maintenance shutdowns represents an essential part of business optimization.

Storage Area

Rubber rollers should be kept away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Temperature between 60 and 90 degrees F is a standard preference.

ㆍThe rubberized portion, of Rubber Rollers, should never be in contact with a Flat area or any other surface.

ㆍCertain rollers can be stored on a flat surface; other Rubber Rollers should be rested horizontally on the journals (end Shafts).

ㆍImproper handling or storage may cause cracks in the rubber, their ends cracks, surface cracks, or flex cracks, so proper precautions should be taken.

Positioning Roller

ㆍMany rollers become useless because of longtime and/or improper storage. This problem can be solved by Re-grinding the roller, only if the dimensional specification tolerances have not been exceeded.

ㆍIf deterioration is too severe during storage or use, the roller should be taken out of service or replaced.

ㆍIf the rubber rollers are stored for a longer period of time on the shop floor, shelf, or flat surface, they should be placed on foam or bubble wrap and rotated repeatedly.

After Usage

ㆍThe rubber rollers should be covered with black or brown paper.

ㆍRubber Rollers when kept on stands should be rotated timely in order to protect them from ozone attack or oxidation. It releases the stress that gets built up in rubber rollers.

ㆍThe replaced rubber rollers should be cleaned thoroughly after usage and dusting should be done with talcum powder.

After cleaning the rollers, they should be stored in their own boxes or on stands until; the rubber roller is put back into service or returned to the manufacturer for recovery. The life span and durability of Rubber Rollers can be extended, just by following these simple measures, a result which will lower the cost of frequent purchases, damages, or recovery.
